I have a hollow and a semi...would have more if I could. Sold a couple that I probably shouldn't have. I'm not a particularly good player but archtops are beautiful and there will always be a place for them, IMHO.

Cost, lack of options or ready availability are the bigger issues. I have two inexpensive arch tops, both of which I love. They have a distinctive sound, playability. Now I want a great one: $3000-$6000😮. The snap, warmth, round tone of my D’Angelico is the draw. My biggest negative is that many of these have fret problems.

The entire guitar industry seems to suggest that if you spend all of your money then you can recreate the early sounds which I find fairly ridiculous. Archtops are beautiful and there will always be a place for them. (Says the guy who has just bought his first one)

Yes a archtop is real cool , but you need to get one to your body. The dead of archtop? that is one funny thing to come up with, it will be there for a long time in jazz, compared to a solid body, we love to feel the music and hear it

your straight bridge top make it play out of tune, replace with compensated bridge top. same with the guitar nut-get within one cent with compensated nut, out 5 cents now. closer is better for jazz.

Very good discussion. Once had a Gibson hollow body, sweet as honey and warm as the beach in Nassau. Got to find me a nice, affordable archtop for my late-night musings. Any thoughts on the best choice for a pauper?

I know, at least for me, an archtop is a very important part of my guitar family. It connects me to the history of jazz and the great luthiers of the past. On a practical note, it sounds great and feels wonderful. At 70 years of age and with some wrist issues, there are days when my Peerless Monarch is easier to play than my ES-339 or Sire Telecaster...and on other days, it isn't. Great topic, Jamie...thanks!

I have a tele, a 335 and an Eastman 372 and my favourite is the Eastman. It's the lightest, it's well balanced and has a great jazz sound. I also prefer hold it in a classical guitar style but supported by a strap. I don't find it too bulky at all contrary to what might be expected.

I don't like tube amps. I prefer my Roland 30 and my Roland 60 Cube. I bet if Joe Pass would have used mainly Roland cubes; they would be suddenly be the must-have amps for every Jazz guitarist and sell for a fortune.

I had a polytone mini brute III in the early 80's for my Ibanez GB10 and my AS200. It sounded sterile but cut through. It worked but it had no soul. I kept that amp for ober 40 Years until I came upon a Roland cube 60. Just by chance. The new once with reverb and so on. At the beginning it sounded too harsh on the clean channel that I solomnly use. Too much treble. So I decided to open the back of the amp by driling 7 one inch holes all over the backplate. The amp istantly filled the room and cut the treble. It lost its directness that I utterly hate. The room suddenely created a natural reverb and the amp came alive. It radiated and I could play realy dynamically. Very warm sounding but defined. My settings for clean jazzguitar on the JC setting are: Bass at 5. middle to 2.5 and treble rolled down to one. Reverb on 1. It sounds much better than my polytone. More ballanced and defined. It sound even better than my Henriksen.. Put it away from the walls when playing at home.

Nice lick! I think I got it. Is it a short 2-5-1 lick in G major? First I was thinking that it would be a long 2-5-1 lick and it sounds also good, but than it would be a 2-5 lick.

1981 Peavey Back Stage 20 watts RMS, 23 pounds, spring reverb tank. I did put a 1983 square magnet eminence speaker, out of a Back Stage Plus. Loud enough for a solo gig. $50.00 I'm happy with the sound.

Tough one, Jamie. I like them both at different times based on the pickups used. Sometimes the black one sounds clearer and other times might sound a little nasally? While the sunburst tone remained pretty consistent. Perfect timing because I just picked up my strat from the luthier and he unblocked my bridge and adjusted it to float. Very excited to dive in this morning 😊

  • @joejones7965

Maybe I'm hearing with my eyes, but the black guitar sounds richer, rounder, thicker, fuller, etc. than the sunburst on every setting. (Or perhaps you're playing a trick and the black guitar has the tremolo and the sunburst is the hardtail?) As for which one sounds better, I suppose it depends on what kind of effect you're seeking in a particular music -- jazz, country, rock, etc. In any case, good vid! Is that one of the string-through, factory hardtails, or is it a standard Strat on which the trem has been "blocked"?
